Exploring Isla Mujeres: A Perfect Day Trip from Cancun

If you're staying in Playa Mujeres or anywhere near Cancun Mexico, Isla Mujeres is a must-see. Just a short ferry ride from the mainland, this charming island offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, local culture, and unforgettable experiences. On our first visit, we explored Isla Mujeres in a day, and here’s a guide to make the most of your trip.

Getting to Isla Mujeres: The Ferry Ride

To get to Isla Mujeres, we took a cab from our resort to the Ultramar ferry terminal. You can pay for your ferry tickets in pesos (we found this easier) or USD. The round-trip fare is 300 pesos per person. There are two ferry options: a fast ferry that takes about 18 minutes and a slower car ferry. Make sure to specify which one you want when purchasing your tickets to avoid any confusion. The fast ferry is the ideal option for those looking to maximize their time on the island.

Meet Isla Driver Robby

Before our trip, we arranged for a golf cart tour with Isla Driver Robby. He communicates easily via Facebook Messenger to arrange the meeting details. Upon arrival, we met Romy, our driver for the day. He took us around Isla in a golf cart, which was the perfect way to explore the island, especially for first-timers like us.

1. Playa Norte: A Hidden Paradise

First stop: Playa Norte, one of the most stunning beaches on the island. This stretch of white sand with crystal-clear waters is perfect for swimming or just relaxing under the sun. Since it was low season, the beach wasn’t crowded, giving us the space to enjoy its serene beauty. The water was so calm and clear it felt like a bathtub—ideal for a refreshing dip.

2. The Soggy Peso Bar: Margaritas and Memories

After soaking in the beach vibes, we headed to the Soggy Peso Bar. This laid-back spot is known for its strong margaritas and unique ambiance. The walls and ceiling are decorated with hats from college and pro sports teams, left by visitors over the years. It's a quirky tradition, so bring a hat to add to the collection! The margaritas here pack a punch, so be ready for a good time.

3. Capitan Dulche: Great Food and Views

Next, we stopped for lunch at Capitan Dulche, a waterfront restaurant offering stunning views of the Caribbean. The food was delicious, and the relaxed atmosphere made it the perfect place to unwind. Whether you’re in the mood for seafood or something more casual, Capitan Dulche has something for everyone.

4. Tortugranja Turtle Sanctuary: A Conservation Effort Worth Supporting

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting Tortugranja, the turtle sanctuary. For just 30 pesos, you can help support the conservation of these incredible creatures. The sanctuary is home to turtles in all stages of development—from tiny hatchlings to larger, injured turtles being rehabilitated. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn more about these marine animals while supporting an important cause.

5. Punta Sur: The Southernmost Point

Our last stop was Punta Sur, the southernmost point of Isla Mujeres. The views from here are absolutely breathtaking. While there’s little shade, the walk to the viewpoint is well worth it. We enjoyed panoramic views of the island and the surrounding ocean, making it the perfect way to end our tour of Isla.

Conclusion: Why Isla Mujeres is a Must-Visit

Even though we spent six hours exploring Isla Mujeres, there’s still so much more to see. If you're looking for a day trip from Cancun, Isla Mujeres offers a variety of experiences, from pristine beaches to cultural landmarks and delicious food. Whether you're a turtle lover, a beach enthusiast, or simply in search of a relaxing day away from the resort, Isla Mujeres should definitely be on your list.

Plan your visit today, and get ready to make memories on this beautiful island paradise!
